Annual Water Conferences Will Bridge The Continental Divide

The Colorado River District and the Getches-Wilkinson Center present two collaborative events on Colorado water law, policy, and management issues on Friday, October 1, 2021

Grand Junction, Colorado — At the end of a unique water year, comes a unique water seminar. Water-Year 2021 unsettled water users across the state of Colorado. Extreme or exceptional drought conditions persisted on the West Slope for months as dry soils and historic high temperatures lowered streamflow. The Colorado River District’s upcoming Annual Water Seminar on October 1, Wake-up Call on the Colorado River, will address the harsh economic and environmental realities of this past year while presenting practical solutions and opportunities among diverse water stakeholders.

Adding to the seminar’s hybrid configuration – with in-person attendance at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction – the Colorado River District will host programming in partnership with the Getches-Wilkinson Center at the University of Colorado Law School. Getches-Wilkinson’s Annual Colorado Law Conference on Natural Resources, Equity in the Colorado River Basin, will bring together diverse expertise from across the region to draw the roadmap to an equitable future in the Colorado River Basin.

On Friday, October 1, both events will provide in-person keynotes, panels, and networking opportunities, along with three simulcast presentations across the Rocky Mountains:

  • Happy (Water) New Year: A Trans-Mountain Hydrology Discussion with experts Gigi Richards, Director, Four Corners Water Center & Instructor of Geosciences at Fort Lewis College and Brad Udall, Senior Water and Climate Research Scientist / Scholar, Colorado Water Center, Colorado State University.
  • Federal Perspectives on Big River Questions with Tanya Trujillo Assistant Secretary for Water and Science, U.S. Department of the Interior
  • Infrastructure, Resilience, Equity, & Change with Michael Connor, Partner WhilmerHale, former Deputy Secretary, Department of Interior

Both events will provide in-person and virtual attendance options. All attendees will have access to the recorded content from both events. Registrants for the Colorado River District’s Annual Seminar will receive free access to the Getches-Wilkinson Center’s Thursday conference programming through a unique livestream link.
