POSITION SUMMARY:

Working in our office in Glenwood Springs near the confluence of the Colorado and Roaring Fork Rivers:
This role maintains core financial systems — including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and asset records — while ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and transparency of financial information.
The Accountant manages monthly, quarterly, and annual financial cycles; oversees billing processes such as water marketing; conducts reconciliations; prepares routine and special financial reports; and provides financial tracking for grants and other specialized projects. This position plays an integral role in year-end closing activities and supports external audit processes by coordinating required documentation and responding to auditor requests. The Accountant also assists in cash and investment management and actively participates in financial planning discussions.
In partnership with the Director of Financial and Administrative Services, the Accountant contributes to the development and maintenance of annual budgets, cash flow projections, monthly cash balance reports, and internal financial policies and procedures. The role supports internal control systems, participates in internal audit functions, and helps ensure ongoing compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
In partnership with the Chief of Operations, the Accountant assists with benefits administration, including participant management in retirement plan and insurance benefit systems.
Additionally, the Accountant is a member of the Administrative Team and may assist with general administrative tasks as needed to support the organization’s broader operational goals.
TYPICAL EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field is required.
- Highly skilled in accounting, computerized accounting software, spreadsheets, and knowledge of governmental accounting procedures gained through three plus years of accounting or finance work experience.
Hiring Salary Range: $69,000 – $90,000 (based on experience and qualifications)

The Colorado River District is a 15-county special district in Western Colorado. Our mission is to lead in the protection, conservation, use, and development of the water resources of the Colorado River basin for the welfare of the District, and to safeguard for Colorado all waters of the Colorado River to which the state is entitled.
